What students are saying about Jack Picone and his courses:

Photojouralism: Telling Stories with Pictures

Jack Picone

Outstanding class and instructor! This is my first class in ppsop and will not be my last.

"Before I started this class I was not used to taking pictures of people that I didn't know. I didn't realize that talking with them and establishing a relationship was important. Also that access was important. I am much more able to do this now. To look for the decisive moment in a situation and to photograph it in a manner that is interesting. I am seeing photography not just an art form but as a way to tell a story. In just a few short weeks I have learned so much."

Jack is terrific not only as an instructor but also as a person! He is attentive to the class & answers questions promptly. He critiques assignments promptly and he first points out the positives of the photo. He then goes on the say how improvements on the composition could be made. I am 100% satisfied with Jacks class content and his teaching style and plan to be back for more of it in the spring for his new class on Documentary photography! So happy I had the opportunity to meet this fine person.

This is my first course and my first time understanding synthesis, thanks to you and the quality of my classmates I met, I really enhanced my way of seeing and taking photos.

As matter of fact, my passion for photography began a long time ago and I have always been self-educated on the photography field. I took a lot of pictures and I didn't dare show them to anyone, I was not sure that my photos could be interesting.

Your course is very motivating because of your personality, your experience, your love and knowledge of photography, the way you communicate with examples and your constructive criticisms. At the end of your course I felt that my eyes where more in tune to ‘seeing’ pictures, and my compositions more considered, and your criticism compelled me to edit my pictures & choose the most poetic. More then this though, you illuminated me that photography could be poetic in its ability to express emotions-visually exists. If ever you start an 8 week-course I would be very glad to participate once more.

Thanks a lot Jack

This course is the top! I have learnt so much about photojournalism and the "decisive moment" in photography I wish I could do it again. Fortunately students will be able to carry on with Jack and the New Class on Documentary photography, we are all so happy. We asked for it! Not only are the Lessons interesting and clearly written with beautiful, inspiring pictures, but Jack is a very dedicated instructor, paying lots of attention to our questions and demands, and he comments images thoroughly and extensively, always encouraging us further, almost as soon as we post our pictures. He also provides lots of new ideas for us (galleries/ competitions) and enables us to view his work in progress, which is really exceptional. He pays lots of attention to emotion in photography, and always has the most relevant, pertinent, and precise words to comment upon the students' images.

Jack's instructions cuts right to the core of to what it takes to shoot in a photojournalist style. Something as simple as requiring me to edit within the viewfinder instead of after the fact has made the world of difference. His feedback on my work was insightful and dead on. I honestly, feel I have developed a better eye for photography and am more equipped to record the stories that interest me.

Jack's critiques during the Photojournalism Course were very thoughtful and thorough, pointing out what worked in the image and if there was anything that needed to be watched out for the next time. He shared his own work in the weekly lessons to illustrate the tenets of photojournalism as well as how to "see" your picture, compose your picture, allow timing and luck to influence the taking of your picture, and finally, the importance of capturing emotion in at least some of your images. He shared with us his passion about his part of the world and telling important stories through single and multiple images. It was very instructive to read his critiques of all the course member's images and to communicate with the other members of the class. In short, Jack challenged us to improve and grow, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this course to anyone interested in improving their image storytelling abilities. Heck, I got so much out of it, I'll be taking his upcoming 8-week Documentary Course next!

Our instructor, Jack, was a great communicator, which maintained the cohesiveness of our group. He often sent encouraging emails, offering kind constructive criticism and tips for improvement, forwarding along concrete examples of the "decisive moment" to spring board from, recommending websites to expand our field of study. Initially I could not have imagined getting much from a class that seemed so "hands-off", but it was a really great experience. It propelled me back into something I had loved and lost for a time and reignited the passion I have for photography. I'm taking another PPSOP class this month and, when I reviewed the intro images I submitted the first time, I was shocked to see a tangible growth and improvement between those and the new images I had captured during, and because of, Jack's class.

I highly recommend Jack Picone's PhotoJournalism course.

This is a very interesting photography course. Well structured, with practical exercises and assignments. What I most liked and definitively will change the way how I see the photography is the fact that is important to know the rules (composition, of the thirds, etc.) but the most important thing is see the photo and freeze the "decisive moment". Thank you very much Jack.

Jack,

Many thanks for two wonderful classes. I took the second class because I felt there was still so much I could learn and after finishing the second I still feel I could take one more. I signed up for your class with an appreciation for photojournalism and wanting to learn more, I walked away with so much more than I expected. Your lessons allowed us to learn about photojournalism while allowing us to use our own vision and creativity. I now find that I have a new appreciation for my environment, I look at things in a new way and I have respect for those around me in general and especially when taking photographs. I've met so many interesting people because of your class that I wouldn't have given a second look to otherwise. I hope to continue to see you on PPSOP so I can continue my photo journey.

One day, I hope to meet you personally as a student in one of your workshops. All my best to you Jack,

Melissa Miller

Hi Jack,

Just wanted to let you know what a great experience your photojournalism online course through PPOSP was. I really enjoyed your weekly lessons that while concise and to the point really gave me lots of food for thought. I use a lot of your tips in my own teaching and loved your "ingredient" analogy. Sharing photos and viewing other students work is such a great way to learn and enhance your own photography. I truly enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any photographer looking for great feedback, tips and lessons in creating compelling and interesting photographs. Thank you!
