What students are saying about Joe Baraban and his courses:

Stretching Your Frame of Mind
Stretching Your Frame of Mind, Part II
The Use of Gestalt in Photography

Joe Baraban

I just finished taking Joe's class and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Because of Joe and the ideas and concepts he teaches, I see everything differently now. Whether I'm driving along a country road or watching TV, I now see negative space, vanishing points, color, light, texture, pattern, line, angle of reflection, tension, perspective - everywhere. Knowing these critical elements of design have truly not only changed how and what I photograph, but have changed the way I look at the world in a very real way. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to Joe for his caring and expertise and if you are considering taking a class or workshop with Joe think no more as I cannot recommend him highly enough. Just DO IT!!!

Shauna

What an amazing course offering from PPSOP!! I loved it. The main part of Joe’s course not in the formal lessons each week, but the constant feedback and lessons he imparted through the week. He often sent an e-mail with a separate “offering” of tools to use or for guidance. The ‘notes from the instructor’ section was full of advice he sent us all week for the entire length of the course. He encouraged us to try again with a different approach after offering suggestions, drawing diagrams, and giving valuable tips. He pushed us to improve, and opened our eyes to a new way of seeing. I’m so happy PPSOP offered his course.

Mary Lou

Joe, I don't think I'm alone in this class when I say that this was without a doubt the best class I've taken here at PPSOP, as well as the ones I've taken at that other online school, if you know what I mean. Your candor and insight, when it comes to critiquing our images, is absolutely right on, and I believe it's making me more aware of what's in the frame, and what should be left out! I would be honored to take another workshop with you in the future. Also, your "extra" tidbits that you gave us were valuable, and completely unexpected. It was like ordering a meatloaf dinner, and then getting handed a rib eye stake on the side!!!

Michael

Joe - I've taken a lot of classes with PPSOP and I've had a few really favorite instructors, but I have NEVER had one who puts this much time an effort into every student. You are really amazing! I love that you comment so soon after our work - it really gives us time to go out and try it again. You are a true teacher. Thank you so much for what you are doing for me and for your students.

Debbie

For some time now I’ve been wanting to sign up for Joe’s class. I am so glad I did. My expectations were very high as I had seen some of his work, and now I can definitely say I got much more out of it than I expected. Almost every day, Joe publishes additional techniques or points us to places where we can explore more information regarding the lesson of the week. His critiques are done on video, are very detailed and always provide practical suggestions on how to improve each image. His “in a perfect world” observations have made me start seeing and looking for things I had not noticed before. It was amazing how much I learned and enjoyed the class. Joe, you have a fan.

Andrea

Joe, I would like to thank you for the class, it was one of the best course that I have ever taken. You have truly not only changed how and what I photograph, but have changed the way I look at the world in a very real way. I see everything differently now. Thank you for the artistic pallet. You pushed me to improve, and open my eyes to a new way of seeing.

I have taken several classes through PPSOP, all of them were very helpful. Without a doubt, however, Your class was the most informative because of the feedback. The critiques have been outstanding. I appreciate your honest. I don't know how you find the time to give so much individual feedback, and I can't tell you how much that has been appreciated. I am looking forward to taking your SYFOM II in spring and workshop in 2013.

Thank You very much Joe !

Meg

Joe,

This month has gone too fast! This was one of the BEST photography classes I have ever taken. My goal for this class was to learn what goes into making a picture and not just shooting a snapshot. I've had a camera since I was 12 years old and taken many pictures the past 56 years. (You're never too old to learn!) Some I have liked, most have been nothing that great. After this class I know I'll have a lot more pictures I like AND I'll know WHY. One thing I also really enjoyed was seeing everyone's photo's and getting in on their critiques. That added so much to this class. Thanks for your comments and suggestions! I am looking forward to taking your SYFOM II later in the year and would ove to do your Maine workshop.

All the best to you and THANK YOU!

Sunny

Joe, I can't begin to thank you enough for all of the effort you are putting into our class. This is truly a different PPSOP experience than I had before and it renews my faith in teachers teaching because they love helping students learn and not seemingly as an additional source of revenue. I am so grateful that I'm studying with someone that can point out the positives and the negatives and does not mince around with what is not working. I've been thinking all week that you're a lost breed. Your class reminded me of my favorite class in college where the professor had high expectations of all of us, threw the works at us and took a personal interest in our success. Until now, I can say he's the best teacher I've ever had. You just blew past him as the best I’ve ever studied with.

Dawn

Joe,

I want to thank you for what has turned out to be the best online photo class I have taken, and there have been many. Using your approach and the tools you shared with the class, I now see everything differently - whether I'm shooting or not. Previously, I only knew instinctively what made a photograph strong; you have helped me understand WHY this is so, and I now seek out these techniques purposefully instead of stumbling upon them. The most pleasant surprise was how helpful and informative your video critiques were, and being able to learn from all the participants' photos, not just my own. The time and care you put into the SYFOM course is clear. I look forward to shooting with you at one of your clinics in the future!

Sara

Joe's class has been one of the best I have taken with PPSOP. Within four weeks he teaches you an artist's palette that can't help but improve your images. You will learn how to approach your subject with a different perspective and how to work it so that you will almost always come away with a winner. The video critiques are invaluable as he gives you very thoughtful and honest insight into how you can really make things better. With his explanations, class notes and copious examples of each of his points, your photography skills can't help but improve. I have taken many, many classes with PPSOP, and Joe's class is at the top of my list. I feel that I have gotten more out of these four weeks than just about all of my other classes combined. I can't wait for Part II.

Helen Mitchell

Joe,

I have taken a lot of PPSOP classes and I wouldn't want to hurt any of the other instructor's feelings, but your course has been, hands down, the best one I've taken.

Joe B. is a fabulous instructor and I highly recommend his on-line course, SYFOM. He is attentive to every detail and it is obvious that he truly wants his students to become better photographers. There is a lot of information presented and he sets the bar high, but you will learn more in 4 weeks than you ever dreamed possible. You really do come away with that artist’s palette to tuck in your camera bag that you can refer to over and over.

I'll be practicing what you are teaching me and, hopefully, getting better as time goes along. And I really do want to come shoot with you sometime.

Carol

Hi Joe.

Your PPSOP SYFOM 1 class was great and has reignited my passion for photography. Thank you!

You got me "making" images instead of just taking them... I had considered myself a "good" photographer but I had become a lazy photographer - not getting up early to shoot in the good light, not using a tripod, not pre-visualizing my images, not seeing beyond my first impression of a scene, and most importantly, becoming way too dependent on Lightroom to crop, straighten, correct exposures, etc. I pretty much panicked when you required that all submitted photos be completely unprocessed and straight out of the camera! But it was a really good exercise for me.

After just 4 short information-filled weeks, I'm already a better photographer. Despite the short time period, you taught me photographic skills and have given me the artistic tools that will last me a lifetime of image making. :-)

You're an excellent instructor with a wealth of great information that you openly share, you're extremely patient, and your critiques are very honest and thorough, yet always constructive in a positive way.

I'm looking forward to Part 2 and hope to shoot with you one day.

Thanks again!

kris

Joe, you are awesome. This is my third class here (you are the best) but I get a sense that some come to these classes to hear how good they are (or how smart they think they are) and may feel hurt when you hit us direct - but I love it! I know you won't but in case you ever wonder - don't change that style! If you want to hear how nice your photos look, save your money and ask your family and friends. If you really want to learn how to make great photos take Joe’s class. Joe’s no nonsense approach really helps you learn what you are doing wrong and how to do it right. His techniques are awesome!

Steve Trescott

Joe:

I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for SYFOM 1&2 classes. Over the past few years I have taken many different classes for Photography in the attempt to better myself. I must say that I have learned more in the past 8 weeks than I did in any of my other classes. I studied Digital Photography at one of our local Junior Colleges, but you showed me so much more about technique. Now as I set up a shot, I am looking for your 15 PPP, negative space, horizon, etc. I also appreciate that you did daily critiques of our work. All of my other online classes were only critiqued at the end of the week. The instant feedback is a big help. Thank you for challenging us to be better Photographers.

Sincerely,

Pat Newman

Thanks JoeB: SYFOM was absolutely the BEST class I have ever taken and that includes workshop classes in the field and I have taken many. You provided a wealth of information through the detailed weekly lessons, additional Notes and examples and promptly responded to our individual questions. I am happy to have a personal notebook full of materials that I can return to time and time again when needed. The happy face "Clock" is permanently posted on my office wall. Your video critiques were outstanding as you not only told us how but showed us how to make better photographs. This course far exceeded my expectations and everyone should take it!

Susan Lambert, Stretching Your Frame of Mind

I would like to thank you for all your help and encouragement over the last four weeks. As an instructor, you are incredibly inspiring and extremely generous with your ideas and information to help improve our image making. The ongoing critiques have been outstanding. I don’t know how you find the time to give so much individual feedback, and I can’t tell you how much that has been appreciated.

Athalie in Madagascar

If you’ve been wondering why your photos sometimes (or often!) don’t “work”, then I highly recommend that you take Joe’s “Stretching Your Frame of Mind” courses. Before completing both parts of SYFOM, I’d make an occasional photo that I thought was well done, but most were ho-hum, and I’d ask myself, what was it that made that one photo good? Well, now I know, plus I have the tools to actively create better photos more often. In his classes, Joe provides you with easy-to-remember tips and pithy aphorisms that really stick in your mind. He provides in-depth and thoughtful critiques of your photos, and shows you how they could be improved. I highly recommend them to anyone serious about improving their photographic skills.

Bonnie

Joe, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you for having been such an outstanding teacher and mentor these past several weeks.

Being a novice "enthusiast" I never appreciated how much "artistry" went into taking a photograph. There is no way I could have gotten the understanding of how the artist palette (the various elements of a compelling photograph) need to be thoughtfully analyzed (visualized) and then brought together on the camera's sensor without taking your class.

Joe, you seem to possess the uncanny ability to get to know each of your students through their photographs in a very personal way and I found your critiques to always be constructive and very much on point.. I very much like your "no nonsense" approach because the tone was always encouraging, conveying that you were quite confident that there was in fact a talented photographer lurking just beneath the surface, Most of all this course made me aware of just how exciting and challenging photography can be (by the way your photographs are truly stunning AND thought provoking) and though I know have a lot of work ahead of me I leave your course truly inspired!!

PPSP is fortunate to have such a thoughtful, committed and talented photographer and teacher/mentor on their staff and I would enthusiastically recommend SYFOM (parts one and two) to whomever (regardless of their present level) is interested in learning how they can develop their photographer's skills and most importantly use them creatively to take compelling photographs and not just pictures.

Please keep me posted about workshops and further courses that you will be offering. Once again thanks for all you efforts!

Max

I want to personally thank you for your daily critiques of our work and your honest opinion and direction. I have taken several photography courses and yours is by far the one that I have learned the most from. I plan on taking part 2 but likely not until the spring when I have more daylight hours to work with. I am also hoping to take one of your workshops. My family has laughed at me on several occasions as I load up my car with props and get down low on my knees or put myself or them in awkward positions to "make" the perfect picture. I sincerely thank you for helping us all be better photographers.

Diane

Joe conducted the best photography workshop I have ever taken. He made the class very interesting and as a result the level of my pictures increased several notches. He takes a personal interest in each student and provides more guidance than any instructor I have ever had.

Joe,

You've been the best teacher I've ever had anywhere, anytime on any subject. The photos I submitted may not have reflected how much I've learned, because I'm pretty stubborn in trying to capture candid, often uncontrollable, people shots. (But at least I know now when they're good and when they suck). You've made my eye so much better. I have learned so much from this class that I can't wait for Joe part II. And thanks, especially, for your big heart.

Clark

I just wanted to say that I have enjoyed this class more than any other! You have made us work, think, learn to perfect, and really see the world differently. I go around thinking, "look at that vanishing point!", or "check out those shapes!", etc. I will be back in October.

By the way, Joe - I've taken a lot of classes with PPSOP and I've had a few really favorite instructors, but I have NEVER had one who puts this much time an effort into every student. You are really amazing! I love that you comment so soon after our work - it really gives us time to go out and try it again. You are a true teacher. Thank you so much for what you are doing for me and for your students.

Debbie

Joe,

This has been a great course. You set high standards and never stopped pushing us to get our photography up a notch. Learning to concentrate on every detail (15PPP) while at the same time concentrating on the whole picture has been a real challenge. It's a tremendous help for me in trying to really see my pictures instead of just seeing what I was trying to do. I have a new set of standards for my picture taking - uhhh making.

The structure of the course using videos and unlimited and prompt critiques was fantastic. I hope I didn't take advantage of your generousity by submitting too many pictures.

When I go out with my camera I find myself saying to myself, Now, if Joe were standing beside me, what would he say? Get up closer, look at the light, where's it coming from etc.

Many thanks to the rest of the class for your submissions and comments. I've had fun participating in every one's learning process and enjoyed your pictures.

At the moment I have pressing family commitments but I'm looking forward to Part II and will be back.

Suzanne

Hi Joe,

Thank you for challenging my brain and my photographic skills. You are the first instructor who has ever given me a detailed critique of my work. Your feedback was useful and useable. As I continue photographing, I will not forget your lessons on VP, NS, pointing my camera toward the light, leading lines, color, the strength of shadows and repetition, the golden hour, and you saying "Lets talk about this photograph…” It was refreshing to hear what was right or wrong with the composition.

Cecilia

Hi Joe,

I just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed your class ‘Stretching Your Frame of Mind’ & how sorry I am that it’s over already!

I signed up for the class because I felt I had hit a wall with my photography & found myself stuck in the proverbial rut. I couldn’t see a shot no matter where I looked & everything looked the same when I got it home. Now that I have your Artist’s Palette & the wealth of ideas that you’ve shared during your critiques, notes & lessons, I can see potential images everywhere, both inside & out!

I’ve taken several PPSOP classes over the past few years & have enjoyed & benefitted immensely from them all, but I have to say that I think your class is the one that will help me the most as I try to ‘step it up a notch’ & learn to stretch my creative frame of mind.

I feel I now have a huge bucket of very practical tools to use when planning & “making” my future shots. I will never again have the excuse that ‘I just don’t know what to shoot’ because it’s all down to my imagination & I hope to cultivate the ability of planning my shots more & simply ‘finding’ them less.

Thanks so much, Joe, for sharing your wealth of information & experience so freely. I hope to see you very soon in Part 2 of SYFOM.

Cheers,

Janet McQueen Manitoba, Canada

This 4-week class "Stretching Your Frame of Mind" taught by the Joe was AMAZING! His video critique's of everyone's work is such a great learning experience for all. Joe has a way of making you want to do better, to see thing's differently, to change your thinking to think just a little bit further outside the box. If your just starting out this is a great class, if you've been shooting for a while and want to improve your eye and get re-motivated then this is the class for you! I look forward to taking Joe's part II course in the near future.

Gina S.

Joe, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your eye with us! I loved your class and I am looking forward to doing part ii, and maybe a workshop, if geography allows. Not only I have learnt a lot about photography, I have also learnt new things about looking. I enrolled in your class because I felt I was not going anywhere with my photos, and now with the tools you gave us I enjoy photography again. You are an excellent teacher, and the format of the class worked well for me.

Laria

Joe, thanks for a fantastic class, it exceeded my expectations. It was the perfect next step for me as someone who is trying to be a better photographer. The amount of materials you provided was awesome! And now I have a whole new vocabulary: 15 PPP, negative space, vanishing point, master shot, artist pallet, make a picture, etc. Your critiques were perfect, detailed and honest .My plan is to not take another class until your “Stretching Your Frame of Mind” Part II class so I can go back and go through each lesson and assignment again.

I can't wait for your part II class!

Thanks again!

Brian Soderholm

Hi Joe, I really enjoyed your class and wanted to thank you. Most of the concepts you presented in weekly lessons were new to me and I liked the structure and process of reading and learning about the concept, putting it to use in my photos and then finishing with input from you on how I did. Each week's lesson built upon the last and at the end of the class I am left with a vastly improved artist's palette. Thanks for the new point of view. The online class format surprisingly turned out to be great, the feedback I got was very instructive and helpful. I am sure Ill take your part II class sometime soon. Thanks again Joe.

Eric

What impressed me about this course is that what he teaches is fundamental to taking good photographs. He genuinely wants to help his students improve their skills and each week we were taught a new way of thinking, stretching our minds, and in the process, improving our photographic skills. His critiques on our weekly assignments were honest, but fair, and were an excellent teaching guide as he commented on what was achieved or missed. It was a pleasure to be one of his students, and I can’t help but think that anyone who takes a course or workshop with him will greatly benefit.

Irene in Canada

I have taken several classes through PPSOP, all of them very helpful. Without a doubt, however, Joe's class was probably the most informative because he helps you to really think and see what takes a photo from the mediocre to the marvelous. His thoughts and insights have been a real inspiration to me. I have become much more aware of the artistic side of photography and the importance of the quality of light. Thank you, Joe, for all your time and patience. Instructors like you definitely make me "hungry" for more PPSOP classes.

Marlane

Of the four online photo courses I have taken, SYFOM was definitely the best. The material is presented in a straightforward manner and the no nonsense critiques were very valuable. I learned as much from my classmates’ work and I did from my own. Joe’s interactive approach allows for much practice and his video critiques definitely take online learning “up a notch”. Thanks, Joe, I really enjoyed your class. I definitely intend to take part two after some further practice of what we have learned so far.

Kathy Mazza

Thanks to you, Joe, I will never again “take” a picture. Instead of snapping away and hoping to get one good shot, I am find myself thinking first about light and looking for ways “make” a picture using light and the “artist pallet”—all the tools of composition -- that you gave us. A special thanks for telling me that it is a rule to “break the rules”. I appreciate your honest, enthusiastic, and thorough critiques and your availability to the class. You have given me the opportunity to see the world in a new way along with the endless challenge and enjoyment of using what I have learned to make pictures that someone might want to look at more than once.

Julie

I've loved this class, Joe, & I'm sorry it's ending, I'll really miss it. Thank you so much for the wealth of information you've shared. I hope to take Part 2 in the very near future .... 'see' you then!

Janet

Joe, thanks for a terrific class. I loved it! Why? Because you put a lot of time and effort into your class. You gave plenty of notes and pictures to back them up. You encouraged us make the time and shoot, and be willing to talk about all of them. You took plenty of time to look at all of our pictures, critique then thoroughly, and advise us to retake them with your new suggestions. I learned a lot and if anyone were going to take a class, I would say “make it Joe’s”.

Anna in Singapore

I think that this was one of the best classes that I have taken both at PPSOP and other online sites. Joe was innovative with new ideas and ways to take our photos up to another level. He also did excellent critiques of both our work samples and our class assignments. Joe encouraged free flow of questions and ideas in the Q&A. I would absolutely take another class from Joe if offered.

A student

Thank you so much Joe for this great online course. I have learned so much from you in the last four weeks. You have opened my mind and my eyes. I see the study of photography as a lifelong journey and I think I am becoming a much more aware and discerning and creative photographer as a direct result of taking this course with you. I have also seen the value of being more disciplined in terms of using a tripod, measuring and observing light, cropping in camera, etc. I thank you for sharing your many years of experience and wisdom with others. You are an amazing mentor. I will continue to follow your blog and very much look forward to taking Part 2 of SYFOM in the future.

Jessica Engel-Aiello, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Joe, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for this course. It definitely has taken my photography up a notch or more. From this course I have learned to see things differently and I appreciate very much your efforts to teach individually and with thoughtfulness. You go out of your way to help your students understand the concept and implement it in a practical way. Your follow emails and mid lesson instructions are most helpful and I know you didn't have to do this but this the hallmark of a good and caring teacher. Your course I believe is one of the best I have taken from PPSOP and I have taken quite a few. I am confident that from the tools I have learned from you, I can only improve my photography.

Rick

My goal is to be the best photographer I can be and strive for that. I truly enjoyed the process of making an image with you. Your class is wonderful as it gave ne new ideas that I had not focused on before. Thank you very much!

A student

Hi Joe, As a family man who only take pictures of family photos on vacation, I have a desire to learn to take other interesting and beautiful photos that I often see in photography books. After getting to know PPSOP, I was wondering which class to sign on to improve my photography knowledge and techniques. I decided to take Joe's SYFOM I class. And I have no regret taking it.

In this class, I had learned new meanings and the significance of simple things in photography like Negative Space and Vanishing Point. This was Lesson 1and I am already made aware of these important points. Another important lesson that I love is when Joe taught us about light - the direction and timing. This is an eye opening for me , as I normally shoot photos at anytime of the day and ignorant of the source of light (direction of light) . Joe gave us examples of his photographs for each lesson and for each point he is trying to drive into our mind.

The manner Joe delivers his critiques is very clear and honest. He said it with clarity if he did not like something in our photographs. And he is willing to give us a suggestion or solution to a problem when we ask for it. I would definitely recommend Joe's SYFOM 1 class for anyone desiring to improve his/her knowledge in photography.

Sincerely,

Lemena in Indonesia

Joe, I know I speak for other students here when I say thanks for all your instruction and extra help in these last two classes (SYFOM1 + 2). I've learned more in these two classes than I've learned in almost a lifetime of photography. I've also learned you don't necessarily have to be born with amazing talent to create artistic photos. All you need is your artist's pallette and 15 PPP to create meaningful photos.

I'm looking forward to your Gestalt class starting today. I also hope to take one of your workshops soon.

Thanks,

Geoff Smith

Joe, this is the best class I’ve ever taken for two reasons: (1) Joe is among the best teachers that I’ve ever had (in any field of study) and (2) the lessons that I’ve learned from Joe are so valuable that I now apply them to every single photograph I take. I cannot recommend Joe and his class highly enough.

Dylan

Joe’s class was challenging and opened my eyes to new ways of seeing through my camera. Joe’s experience as a commercial photographer and background in fine art has given him a unique combination of sense of color, light, design, and perspective within a framework of the practical aspects of what it takes for an image to sell an idea. Thanks again for a great class. As someone who normally doesn’t set up shots and always “takes” pictures, it was challenging for me to start thinking about “making” pictures. It was tough, but I think you have opened my mind to more possibilities.

Kyle

Your course is wonderful Joe and I thank you very much indeed. Your energy is infectious and your ability to lead us through the learning process is excellent. What an inspirational course Joe. Thank you so much for giving your time so generously and in such an accessible fashion.

Gina in England

I've just completed Joe Baraban's 4 week course "Stretching Your Frame of Mind 1" (SYFOM1) and I owe Joe a large debt of gratitude.

Most people know that driving a car involves knowing how to turn it on, press pedals, and turn a wheel. Likewise most people know that using a camera involves turning it on and pressing a button. After driving a car for 20 years you will undoubtedly have picked up some skills that make you a much better driver than someone just learning. Though even after 20 years of experience you still wouldn't expect to beat a professional driver like Jeff Gordon, not even when he’s behind the wheel of your own car that fits you like a glove, would you?

If you wanted to make yourself a better driver either for safety or competition, you probably wouldn't mind having Jeff Gordon as your instructor. This is exactly how I feel about Joe after having had him as my photography instructor for the past 4 weeks. He'll put you at the wheel, make a video recording of how you perform, and critique every point of your performance. Not only that, you'll see him critique every other student in the class. Within the first week you'll have observed the common mistakes that most everyone makes and you certainly won't feel alone. By the end of the first week you will see improvements in your own performance (if you don't then you had to be asleep at the wheel!)

If you're like me, you have a collection of photos that you've taken over time and you have some favorites. Of your favorites you can't put a finger on exactly what makes them your favorites. By the end of Joe's 4 weeks you won't only know what made those your favorites but you'll also know how to make images that will beat your favorite shots, hands down.

I know I'm not the only one that feels this way, Joe's second course SYFOM2 is already full and it's not for another month from now.

Joe, I hope my testimonial helps lead others to take your classes, it's the best way I can think to repay you. Without a doubt I got more for my dollar than I bargained for.

Jeff Gerber

For some time now I had wanted to sign up for Joe’s class.

Andreas

Joe, you have inspired me in so many ways with your teaching. I have really enjoyed this class and I still don’t want it to end. I hope to learn more from you if I have the chance in the future. Maybe some day I see you in your workshop.

Eag in Switzerland

Thank you Joe for a stimulating class. It has changed how I see the world, and I know that my photographs are going to continue to improve, as your ‘artist palette’ becomes more and more a natural part You are a generous teacher, and I genuinely felt that you really cared about my growth as a photographer.

After I had worked through all the basic photographic subjects, I felt something was missing from my images. Joe Baraban to the rescue! His workshop, ‘”stretching your frame of mind”, was the most dynamic class I’ve ever taken. Joe is quick to answer questions and not shy about giving helpful criticism or praise. This class has truly taken my pictures to the next level.

Firstly, I have to say big thank you to you, Joe - I have learned a lot and it prompted me to think much more about photos I have taken and which I would like to take. I have tons of ideas now - though the putting them into reality ... hurts...For the moment, I cannot produce the result I want. But I will strive to get in better shape soon and for that I am carrying my camera with “15 PIP” and ‘artist's palette’ around and asking myself about "does it" a lot when making a picture. All the best from Prague

Joe, your class is invaluable, a treasure trove of information to think about, process and put to use. From the 15ppp to proximity to gestalt to all the other little tidbits sent in the instructor’s notes, I can truly say that the wealth of knowledge presented in this class is by far the best. Loved your video critiques, so helpful.

It is one thing to “take a *photograph” and quite another to “make an image”. My journey began with the class “stretching your frame of mind”, with Joe Baraban at the helm. Under Joe’s guidance, I learned to ‘paint with light’, the camera as my brush. Also, by using color and the elements of design on my ‘artist palette’, I learned to incorporate the ‘theory of Gestalt into my imagery. Joe’s words are in my mind with every click of the shutter. If you want to get your self to the next level, you won’t regret having Joe Baraban giving you a nudge.

Joe Baraban’s course is first rate, and pitched at a level that in my opinion would provide a strong learning experience for any photographer, no matter their level or their primary area of photographic interest. Joe is attentive to his student’s questions and needs. His course materials are well prepared and illustrative of the concepts being put forward. Better yet, each week supplementary tips and advice were passed along to class participants in neat little packages with tittles like “The fifteen point inspection plan”. His photo critiques are honest and very helpful. A number of us would definitely take a second course offering taught by Joe.

Joe, thank you very much! This class was a very valuable experience for me. Your candid critiques were very helpful, and the most important thing I learned in this class is that even a good shot can be made better. For me it was hard to get use to new terms you use like negative space, vanishing points, angle of reflection, etc. Maybe because their meaning in the dictionary are different. But when I got use to them, learning from you was a great pleasure. I’m very grateful to you and I’m sorry this course was only four weeks.

Joe, I don't think I'm alone in this class when I say that this was without a doubt the best class I've taken here at PPSOP, as well as the ones I've taken at that other online school, if you know what I mean. Your candor and insight, when it comes to critiquing our images, is absolutely right on...and I believe it's making me more aware of what's in the frame, and what should be left out! Also, your "extra" tidbits that you gave us were valuable, and completely unexpected. It was like ordering a meatloaf dinner, and then getting handed a rib eye stake on the side!!! I would be honored to take a workshop with you in the future. Joe, it was a pure pleasure taking this class!!!!

About your classes I can only say one thing: WHY ONLY FOUR WEEKS?!?!?!

I think you could extend your class to at least eight weeks. I am sure there is much more you could share with students. I am impressed with your photos, knowledge and your attitude as a teacher. I have recommended your class to all my friends.

This has been my favorite class that I have taken at PPSOP. Thanks Joe for all your advice and the awesome critiques! I will never photograph the same again!!! Hopefully I will keep growing as everyone in the class has already.

I, too, have to join the chorus in saying that this class has forever changed the way I shoot. It's given me all I hoped for and much, much more. The syllabus is masterfully structured and jam-packed with the best tips. Most of all, Joe, your generosity with your time and with your superior photographic wisdom greatly contributes to making the experience invaluable. Oh and in case that wasn't clear – BEST, BEST, BEST course I have EVER taken (and I have taken MANY!)

I think this course was super productive. We got a huge load of critics, tips, concepts, and experience in just 4 weeks. Way more than the average PPSOP course.

Well Done Joe, thank you for your effort! I will be back for part II!

Firstly I would like to say a big thank you for all of the effort that you put into your workshop, it was great. I really enjoyed shooting with you and the other students and since then I have been re-looking at many of my shots and considering how I could go about making them better next time.

For me it was an enlightening course not only for the practical information gleaned from you; but it has also made me question other points of view and I am now reading up on the Gestalt theories. There will certainly be more people in my pictures leaving the frame than arriving in them from now on!

Joe, I would like to thank you for this amazing class. I have learned SO MUCH, not only from the lessons, but even more from your extra information during the week, your "pearls of wisdom", and certainly your honest and helpful critiques, coming as soon as an image has been submitted... and also of course from the very cool video tutorials. I just enjoyed these four weeks, and you will see me in the part II class for sure!

Susanne

I have been nourishing on your amazing workshop I attended at Julia Dean. It has given me inspiration, new ideas, and the impetus to follow them. The many tools you shared with us, and your 15 checkpoints are definitely making me looking through my viewfinder, and at other photographers' images in a new way. I love it.

Rina

Joe, I wanted to thank you for the last 4 weeks. I thought you really added a lot of value to the course and, as a result, I think I am a better photographer (in a small way). Your videos were an excellent way to critique the photos sent in.

Some of the best advice I have received to date came from this course. In the back of my mind, I always have believed I can fix most images back at the computer. As a result, I don’t think I spent enough time trying to set up a great shot. Now, with a few of your techniques, I am really trying to get a shot that works right from the camera.

I have decided to take the second part of the course in April. I am hoping you will continue to test a challenge me next month.

All the best.
