Food Photography 201 - Recipes for Success
Starting date:

Instructors: Ron Goldman/Kent Cameron                                            Duration: 4 Weeks            Cost: US$195

Food Photography 201 - Recipes for Success Are you ready to take the next step in your pursuit of perfect food images? Do you want to learn more about lighting as it pertains to food photography? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to create perfect lighting anytime, anywhere, no matter the time of day or time of year? If you answered "YES" to any of these questions, then this class is for you!

Food photography is all about the lighting and in this course we will be focusing on just that. Whether you are using strobes or continuous lighting, we will show you how to set them up to get the professional looking results you want.

We will cover the qualities of artificial light sources as well as how to modify them to suit your subject. Single and multiple lighting set ups. Lighting direction and how it relates to the properties of the subject.

Of course, we will also be covering composition, lens selection, depth of field, shooting angles, props, backgrounds, tools, and "tricks of the trade" each week.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Studio Lighting 101
There are many types of lighting available and all of them have unique qualities. We will discuss how to use each of them to your advantage as well as how to modify them to get the look you are after. We will explain the difference between "Key Light" and "Fill Light" as well as the use of reflectors and other equipment.

Lesson 2: Shooting with a single light source.
Depending on your subject and/or location, there will be times when you will only need or only be able to shoot with a single light source. The placement, intensity, and quality of that single light will be critical and we will show you how to get the most out of it for many different subjects. All of the images for this lesson will be shot with a single light, light modifiers and reflectors.

Lesson 3: Multiple Lights
There are going to be times when a single light and reflector are just not enough to properly light the subject. In lesson 3, we will cover how to correctly set up multiple lights and adjust the ratios between them for proper key and fill. All of the images in this lesson will be shot with at least two lights as well as modifiers, and reflectors. A light meter can be very useful for adjusting lighting ratios especially if this is your first time attempting to do so. They can save you a LOT of time with setup so you have more time to shoot. While not a necessity, we highly recommend that you buy, borrow, or rent one for this lesson! If you need help selecting one, just ask and we will make some recommendations.

Lesson 4: Back lighting, Rim Lighting, Splashes, Pours, and more.
We will be taking advantage of the translucent qualities of certain foods, liquids, and containers and learning how to correctly light for these qualities. We will also cover shooting glass, how to shoot pouring liquids and how to capture splashes along with some simple tricks that make these techniques a lot easier!

Course Requirement:

This is an intermediate level class and will require having taken "The Art of Food Photography", "Introduction to Food Photography" or submitting images for the instructors to review before signing up.

Students must have a thorough understanding of their camera, aperture and shutter speed. A tripod is an absolute necessity! A digital or film SLR with a wide angle, normal, and short telephoto, macro lens or extension tubes, and a shutter release will help you get the most from this class. Most of the assignment images will need to be shot using artificial lighting so you will need at least a 2 light kit with stands, a boom stand or the ability to hang a light overhead, softboxes or umbrellas, a grid reflector with grids, and other light modifiers. A light meter will come in handy but is not necessary. Please contact the instructor, ron@rongoldmanphotography.com, for a more detailed list of acceptable lighting gear or if you need help selecting equipment.
